You’ve probably heard people talk about cosmetic dentistry quite a bit and often, we find people aren’t really sure what kind of treatment falls into this category. To help clear the confusion, our NovaDental team has put together this handy cosmetic dentistry guide.
Before we continue, it’s important to know what cosmetic dentistry is and what falls under this umbrella.
Cosmetic dentistry refers to any dental work that improves the appearance (not necessarily the function) of your teeth, gums and/or bite. You would’ve heard some dentists refer to themselves as cosmetic dentists regardless of the qualifications they have.
Here are the most common treatments we find people enquiring about or needing at our clinics.
Veneers cover the front surface of the teeth and are wafer-thin shells made specifically for an individual. People get veneers if they’re interested in changing the colour, shape, size or even length of the teeth and are made out of either porcelain or resin composite.
Meanwhile, a crown is placed over a week or damaged tooth to improve its shape, size, strength and/or appearance. This tooth-shaped ‘cap’ should last up to 15 years and can be made of metal, porcelain and metal, resin or ceramic. Before a crown can be inserted, the existing tooth is filed down before the crown is cemented over it so that the tooth is fully encased.
The many different types of braces can boost the health and appearance of any smile, both adults and children. If you are keen on straightening your teeth, you’ve got a few options available to you including both Invisalign ( learn more here) and cosmetic braces. These light coloured braces are fixed to a limited number of your upper and lower teeth for approximately 6 months. You can read more about braces here.
You would have seen a lot of talk about teeth whitening and getting a whiter, brighter smile. And in this selfie-obsessed age, a great smile is more important than ever before. Do you find yourself trying to cover your smile with your mouth? Or are you just really aware and self-conscious of how yellow your teeth are?
