What is TMD?

Fundamentally, it consists of two components:

  • Muscles
  • Jaw joints

For example, a headache is described as a muscle contraction tension headache or put simply, muscle cramp. Jaw joint or jaw pain symptoms are primarily inflammation of disks and ligaments, displacement or pinching of disks and osteoarthritic changes within the jaw bones.

Signs that you may have TMD can be complex but mostly, muscle dysfunction presents as headaches in the temporal region, facial pain in the cheek muscles and neck aches in the back of the head and neck. Less frequently, it presents as pain behind your eyes or sore throats.

Jaw joint signs can be pain in front of your ear when chewing or yawning, difficulty in opening the jaw, clicking or grating in the jaw joints and the jaw moving to one side on opening.

The TMD joint is a unique one in our bodies – the jaw bones can rotate, twist and translate. The disc can move independently of the jaw bones so it can be jammed, locked or torn. Meanwhile, an X-ray or CAT scan examination can show positional changes in bones and discs and osteoarthritic changes which can cause pain.

When it comes to the actual treatment of TMD, it all depends on the patient’s history. If they’re experiencing their first episode, treatment can be anti-inflammatory medication, heat therapy, a soft diet and rest.

If symptoms persist, treatment is definitely required.
