Mindfulness. It’s one of those buzz words we hear all the time but what does it actually mean?
In its simplest form, mindfulness is all about just being present and living in the moment. Over the years, gradually, we’ve become a faster paced society where we want everything yesterday and things are moving at a rapid pace all the time.
Sometimes, it takes a real sense of awareness to settle yourself down and have a think only about what’s happening right now. Every now and again, everyone’s mind waivers back to the past and we start thinking about what’s happened. That said, if you’re feeling trapped in your past, that’s when the real problems start and at the end of the day, given you can’t change your past, you’re far better off focusing on the now.
Know that being mindful takes conscious effort and can be developed by participating in activities such as meditation, yoga and walking. If you’re reading this and thinking, ‘what’s the point?’, there are many benefits to practising mindfulness. Being mindful can help to:a
- Relieve stress.
- Improve sleep.
- Keep depression and/or anxiety in check.
- Make you feel happier.
- Calm you so that you feel more emotionally stable.
To put it all simply, have a read of this quote from Jon Kabat-Zinn:
“Mindfulness means paying attention in a particular way; On purpose, in the present moment and non-judgmentally.”
